Pet Stain/Odor Removal

Pet Stain/Odor Removal

As a pet owner, you may know that even the best-trained dog and cats can have an accident in your home. In fact, your home has probably seen its fair share of pet odors and stains. Removing pet urine odor and stains from your carpets can be a challenging and overly frustrating process. It’s essential to have your carpets, rugs, or upholstery treated as soon as an accident happens to guarantee that the odor and stain are completely removed. The longer the stain sits, the harder it is going to be to remove.

Pet urine can cause permanent damage to your floors and can also create an unhealthy indoor environment for you and your loved ones if not properly dealt with. Urine acts as an acid and when it dries it turns alkaline (similar to the ionic salt you find in a battery), making the stain more difficult to remove. As the urine starts to dry and become oxidized it starts to create a color change, which can become permanent if the urine is not removed in a timely manner.

What’s That Smell?
Odor from pet urine comes in two different forms. The first form is bacteria. It just so happens that urine is a breeding ground for bacteria and other contaminants. The bacteria growth is rapid and breaks down the urine, creating amino acids. The amino acids become embedded in the carpet fibers to a point of becoming part of that fiber. The waste and released gasses from the decaying urine creates that unpleasant odor you experience.

The second form is the chemical odor that exists even when the bacteria has been killed. The salts that were left behind as the urine dries are hydrophilic and can draw moisture to them. In order to get rid of the odor, you must get rid of the urine salts. That is why soap and water aren’t effective against pet odors.
